Do. 00:08:45 Hi this is border crossings My name is Larry London I welcome you to our show today 00:08:49 and in our studios and on tour for the act one which is your debut album you very 00:08:55 excited Marian Hill are here welcome yes they happen to know you have 00:08:59 a Samantha Jeremy Yes So tell us how you came about Marian hill I understand has to 00:09:04 do with the novel but explain to the audience where the name came from yeah so 00:09:09 actually we were in 00:09:10 a production of The Music Man together and 8th grade one each other for 00:09:13 a really long time and Jeremy played Harold Hill and I played Marian Pero and we 00:09:18 combined our character names and we decided that's what you wanted to call your 00:09:21 your music collaboration as later when we when we made 00:09:25 a song together and we wanted to have some kind of artist name for it we figured we 00:09:28 wanted to be something that sounded cool but also had 00:09:30 a significance for us and wasn't just like something we picked out of the air so we 00:09:35 stumbled on Marian health and well how would you describe your music I know you had 00:09:38 a huge hit with down this past year I mean the song was still being played 00:09:43 everywhere you just and it must be exciting to you guys you know you go into 00:09:47 a club and there it is you go into an elevator and there it is you turn on the 00:09:51 radio and it was really exciting I had an experience where I was in my apartment in 00:09:54 New York and I heard it coming from the street below and that was really really 00:09:58 cool but how would you describe your music kind of music because because it's 00:10:02 a jazz stuff today I mean it's always 00:10:05 a fun game I just want to press play and be like it's that but we have couple 00:10:09 things we've said are electronic r. And b. 00:10:12 We also say Drake me tell if it's Gerald which is a nice little shorthand for 00:10:16 a whole thing that's going on I think the production has really hip hop electronic 00:10:21 influence the vocals are very pop and r. And b. 00:10:24 Blues influence and all together it's very you know when you have 00:10:28 a track with the saxophone player yes we do respect 00:10:30 a jazz musician and so that's kind of interesting to combine you know 00:10:34 a little jazz and pop I like that idea and it seems like 00:10:37 a lot of musicians are getting more and more experimental these days yet we're 00:10:41 hearing instruments like the cello uncleanly and such that you don't really 00:10:45 typically. Here in Iraq to obey Him Yeah I think there's so much access to music 00:10:50 now everybody can have everything with all the streaming services and all that it's 00:10:55 become more and more important and exciting to find ways to differentiate yourself 00:10:59 and do something different that's not happening elsewhere to catch people's eyes 00:11:04 and one big thing for us from the beginning has been finding ways to bring live 00:11:07 instrumentation and electronic stuff together and Steve are saxophonist has been 00:11:12 a friend of ours for 00:11:13 a long long time now that we're all school I want on one tatt I'm chopping up his 00:11:18 his sack sample and turning it into the main riff and that song you know he's part 00:11:23 of our live show and that's always like that essential part of Merion How is the 00:11:28 live audience around it so you are 00:11:31 a couple off stage no no no just friends is actually the confusion Yeah we do live 00:11:37 questions but no we're just good friends just good for us well that keeps it easier 00:11:43 you know if you go separately Reggie you know what he has no business and you know 00:11:46 I'd be terrible I mean it's hard but you know so you colab read on the music who 00:11:50 does the writing I mean is it 00:11:52 a team effort or is one person goes melody one person does the lyrics or how does 00:11:56 it work yeah I know it's very collaborative Jeremy is the sole producer and then we 00:12:01 write melody and lyrics together but often we will start out with 00:12:04 a skeleton of the beat the Germans worked on and then it will just sort of happen 00:12:08 simultaneously and often the songs that we write are influenced by the production. 00:12:14 Yeah it's all you guys studying different things business and I guess theater and 00:12:20 so you decided as music as the career that's going to be an interesting change of 00:12:24 direction music was always I think like for me I was I was studying theater because 00:12:28 the music major had way too many prerequisites and I could take all the music 00:12:31 courses I wanted and be the theater major so I was I was I was singing throughout 00:12:37 college I was writing music throughout college. And so so from the outside it might 00:12:43 not seem natural but it was very in line. With with what I had always been wanting 00:12:47 to do it one way or another and I think I read somewhere that the song down there 00:12:51 was an accidental hit that really just kind of you didn't expect that to be 00:12:55 a big hit like it is you know I mean we were fortunate in that it was featured in 00:12:58 that awful campaign that the i Pods and people started she's dancing it and it got 00:13:04 to number one which made people really excited and allowed radio to take 00:13:08 a chance on it. Out of nowhere I mean we never expected the down of all of our 00:13:13 songs would be the one to take off and radio the most song I guess you know so 00:13:19 that's that is Cher and wow yeah that's 00:13:22 a couple week that's awesome yeah the Rolling Stone said you're one of the artists 00:13:26 to watch so this is a you know and exciting time your debut album you have 00:13:30 a couple of the pieces but this is the debut album and I guess you reissued it 00:13:35 collects You know when the complete could and you did a song with Lauren Drake you 00:13:38 a 5th harmony Yeah that's the new single or Oh I mean it's been out there yeah we 00:13:44 really haven't December and believe yeah just just one of the many things that 00:13:48 we've done and she's wonderful and so talented it worked out so well she was 00:13:54 a fan of our so we're just going write about it through an interview and then she 00:13:58 came to 00:13:59 a show and we met and it was just so easy to hang out with her and have fun and she 00:14:04 was so genuinely loved music so is only a matter of time before we started out 00:14:08 a way that we could work on something together and that tells me I'm so quickly and 00:14:12 easily so excited to get it out there but it's 00:14:15 a testament to her too because I mean it is so different from that harmony 00:14:18 sometimes from the outside looking in you would expect that that would be 00:14:22 a natural collaboration but she's not such 00:14:25 a great super talented and you guys are to blame for the rumors that she's leaving 00:14:29 for sure oh my god no no you know you really genuinely worried about that I was 00:14:35 never in her plan really I'm superstitious of what could be misconstrued She's 00:14:40 a sweet and I've had 5th Harmony on 00:14:42 a couple times you know they're all really nice other other collaboration. In the 00:14:45 future for you guys that we think you can let me in and secrets this is so much you 00:14:50 come on oh never look at which we know we're always sending out feelers we're 00:14:54 always trying new things when nothing said in stone either genuinely So we've got 00:14:58 in the room with some people that. You can say nothing like so what if you're 00:15:03 a I mean favorite part of this business is that the writing in the producing 00:15:06 because I know you guys have said that you create music that's different from most 00:15:10 of what you can hear these days yeah very different so would you have to say is 00:15:13 that the singing the performing or the writing for me it's very much the writing 00:15:18 producing of making new things and being this being in the studio working on the 00:15:24 music it's definitely my happy place and you I prefer being out on the road 00:15:29 performing on stage. I I feel that the more I perform the more comfortable I get 00:15:36 you know what I have too much time off it takes me 00:15:38 a while to get back into it again and there's such 00:15:41 a unique energy that you can't find anywhere else but on stage there's nothing like 00:15:46 a great show right you guys put on 00:15:48 a great show of c one of the videos and you look like 00:15:50 a lot of fun you know you're on tour right now going to my home town pretty soon 00:15:55 Detroit is right and you're going to live stream out yeah I live in 00:15:59 a 2nd I will be going I've streamed on Twitter I think from Live Nation's Twitter 00:16:03 page and I understand correctly there's going to be 00:16:05 a lot of promo happening for it over the weekend and into the start of next week 00:16:08 but it will be on Tuesday night and it's the down yesterday and who is the opening 00:16:13 Opie I think it will be. I've not heard of her him or them yeah yeah it's 00:16:19 a group of guys and they say they make really cool music it's electronic with some 00:16:26 guitars with the bass they've got really great voices and they had a song that had 00:16:30 a real blow up moment on Spotify within the last year and have just been just kind 00:16:35 of realize they were a band that are starting out and I think we see 00:16:38 a lot of our beginnings and they went to college with me and were like that for 00:16:43 years before me but I kind of knew. It's been exciting to be able to have 00:16:47 a missed opportunity in their growth they are really talented So what's been the 00:16:51 highlight I hate to ask 00:16:52 a cliche question but what's been the highly because it's been 00:16:54 a very recent ride for you within the last year and it was an unexpected write so 00:16:59 what would you say probably have different views on what would be the highlight but 00:17:02 what would it be. I mean for me I grew up listening to the radio every time I would 00:17:09 get my car I would turn on cue when I had to in Philly. And just to Harry or 00:17:16 self on the radio is sort of 00:17:18 a lifelong dream especially with the down was just so validating and so cool and 00:17:24 such a milestone. But I've been waiting for for 00:17:28 a long time so that's when you know yourself for the 1st. I was driving I 00:17:35 was in Philly and driving to the train station to go back to New York and my dad 00:17:40 and I were in the car together and who is not 00:17:42 a fan of pop radio but soon found as often you just like the listening to it all 00:17:46 the time so it's like getting through every other song and right as I was about to 00:17:51 get out of the car we heard and I bet you know my daughter this is her on the way 00:17:56 to the Ok yeah it was really cool that was really exciting for me too but I think 00:18:03 for me it would have it would probably be the Sam moment that happened being number 00:18:07 one in the country for like many many weeks and at one point I think number 4 in 00:18:11 the whole world like. You know it like that reach is like so far and like it's 00:18:18 still happening in places and all over the world but we're like the song is top 10 00:18:22 and it's Stamboul like right and just they're just making that magic and knowing 00:18:27 that everywhere around the world this song was in people's ears that people people 00:18:31 were hearing something that we had made and liking it so much that they had to know 00:18:36 what it was like You can't ask for more than this in musician and writer I would 00:18:40 add to that Dell has been played at sporting events like it was played during an 00:18:44 n.h.l. Playoff game in Edmonton rather And I want to play the song 00:18:49 a lot of your play of the song Yeah and there is I believe he's on. I think he 00:18:55 plays for Washington and he is like his walk up song yet right now it's really cold 00:18:59 everywhere and then with someone across 00:19:01 a street musician and there's someone playing in the subway on steel drums they 00:19:05 were playing down so it really feels like it had an impact but that's going to go 00:19:11 out of the show you because you have that huge hit that kind of the unexpected fame 00:19:16 and the unexpected pressure that comes with things and success in the business 00:19:19 world so now the next single you know you're feeling too because down was. 00:19:26 Like if you asked me like we down we rode with the rest of our album when we were 00:19:32 all looking at our album before this happened people were like Downes amazing I 00:19:38 want to use amazing several other songs are amazing nobody was saying nobody on our 00:19:43 whole team was saying down to the best song we can really make this 00:19:46 a hit nobody so it's hard to like act like going forward we now know what 00:19:53 the best song is because as we've seen it's really I don't know I saw this for 00:19:59 a quote recently that's been helping me in this time where he's like you can't make 00:20:03 a hit song the public makes 00:20:05 a hit song I like that all you can do is make music that you love and put it out 00:20:12 there and the rest is not up to you and you mentioned that one of the highlights 00:20:16 for you was knowing that your music is doing so well around the world and you will 00:20:19 be headed around the world very soon your tour goes to you knocked over to the u.k. 00:20:24 I see quite 00:20:24 a list of some some very big countries and that's going to be exciting as there are 00:20:29 a lot of fun we always love and we can get over there and will be are playing our 00:20:33 1st ever show in Istanbul which I'm not sure if it's announced yet but it's. 00:20:40 Well the tickets will be starting to go you know so tell me working people find you 00:20:45 on social media because you have a lot of fans around the world and we're reaching 00:20:48 a lot of people around the world yeah they may want to reach out to you guys or 00:20:51 check you out where do they go yeah are there on Instagram Twitter satellite where 00:20:57 is Mariano music who writes marry her music and everywhere not just marry him you 00:21:02 marry me tell me that's 00:21:03 a report and you get Facebook and all that stuff Twitter and yeah we know now Mary 00:21:08 and Hillary in our studios Samantha and Jeremy and the tour continues and you work 00:21:13 with Big Sean as well so tell me about that we met him when we were we last minute 00:21:19 we're doing Fallon So that's also funny because on 00:21:22 a Wednesday we found out we were doing Fallon on 00:21:24 a Friday when I. Well yeah but he was the couch guest and 00:21:31 we were the musical guest so we got to meet him backstage and chat and I've always 00:21:35 been 00:21:35 a fan of his and he really liked what he heard so from that we were in touch and 00:21:41 chatting and we wanted to get 00:21:43 a version of down with Hip-Hop verse on it and it seemed like an obvious choice so 00:21:47 why did you go why did you call your album Act one was we were trying to think of 00:21:52 what unified the record and really like we had been writing our debut like we were 00:21:57 really trying to define ourselves. But you can't live your life in fear I think you just. 00:22:49 Want going to 00:22:50 a concert is one of the great joys of life performing and you just have to leave it 00:22:54 all out on stage and then keep going you know keeping keeping everyone in your 00:23:00 thoughts that's great you know I did hear one artist say that if we start canceling 00:23:04 shows they will totally. And I think I mean I also 00:23:10 it's so horrible and stuff like this happens but it's also important to remember I 00:23:14 like to see comfort in statistics and things like that and it's still more likely 00:23:19 that we'll get in a car crash on the road than anything would happen at 00:23:23 a show of ours thankfully and. Only right we're going to fight them here but we do 00:23:28 know that you don't spend our days being like oh my God Is today the day that we 00:23:32 crash right so similarly you just can't you can't let that fear sleep and it's just 00:23:38 not productive you just gotta keep doing what you do keep spreading love and 00:23:43 positivity as we try to do with confidence.
